Statement
Through the presentation of instructions, template-based constructions or of multiples (most inspired by simple toys), viewers of my artwork are invited to question how the various repetitive and seemingly identical parts that comprise a single work articulate notions of individuality, commonality, and identity. The subtle differences between the varied materials and the hand-crafted nature of their assembly draws attention, not only to the small irregularities within each sculpture, but also to one’s familiarity with the endless sameness normally seen in rows of mechanically-produced commercial products. Within the work I strive to set up a number of opposing relationships such as the discord between the hand and the machine, the whole and its parts, completeness to incompleteness, as well as flirting with the ever-present association of art and commodity. These oppositions provide a scale by which the viewer can measure “uniqueness” among several axes and weigh the qualities that separate the familiar from the strange and the individual from the collective.
